“The Note,” by Alfafair Burke, is a quick paced suspenseful story in which three lifelong friends meet for a long weekend in the Hamptons for some fun in the sun. They are reuniting for the first time in decades.
May Hanover is a first generation Chinese American. She was raised by a single mother. May has always been the good girl, the rule follower. She is a Harvard grad who attended Columbia Law School.
Kelsey Ellis is the beautiful blonde daughter of a wealthy Boston millionaire. Kelsey grew up privileged and went to work for her overbearing father in his real estate business. She is the friend who rented the house in the Hamptons.
Lauren is nine years older than the other two. She was the music instructor at the Wildwood Summer Arts Camp, the camp May and Kelsey attended as students and then worked at as counselors. Lauren is a musical prodigy and is currently part of the Houston Symphony.
Although they have all moved on since those days of summer camp and rarely see each other, they have stayed in touch. Their friendship has survived trauma, loss and tragedy. The characters are not very likeable but are well developed through their back stories. Readers soon learn that they all have their own tangled web of secrets and lies.
Their first night in town has them drinking too many cocktails at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor and chastising the couple who stole the parking spot they were patiently waiting for. In their drunkenness they write a note that they joke about leaving on the driver’s windshield. Unbeknownst to May and Lauren, Kelsey actually leaves the note on the car.
The note, meant as a harmless prank, sets off a dangerous chain of events when the person pranked goes missing. As the police investigate the missing person, David Smith, they find themselves questioning the three friends. New truths and secretes are subsequently exposed. Where do their loyalties lie? Will their friendship survive?
This thriller is full of twists, mis-directions and red herrings.
