What would happen if, suddenly, every adult on earth received information about exactly how long they would live? That is the premise of the thought provoking and well written book, The Measure by Nikki Erick.
One day, a small wooden box arrives on the doorstep of each person aged 22 or older. Inside is a simple string. It is soon discovered that the length of that string corresponds to the lifespan of its owner.
The story follows eight people and the ways in which they, their loved ones, their communities, and their country choose to cope with this impactful piece of information. The divisions and prejudices as well as the compassion and bravery that are displayed make this book a very apt allegory for the way societies handle differences in individuals.
